Joseph N. Gitlin, D.P.H Dr. Gitlin is an Associate Professor in the Radiology Department of The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions concerned with the development and evaluation of new technology in medical imaging. He is also a founder and Secretary/Treasurer of the Radiology Information System Consortium (RISC) that developed the specifications and tested a comprehensive radiology information system marketed by the Digital Equipment Corporation. RISC has several ongoing projects including the design of a speech recognition product and the sponsorship of a biennial conference on Computer Applications in Radiology. |

Dr. Gitlin was also a founder of Vortech Data, Inc, now part of Kodak Health Imaging Systems, and guided the development and testing of a state-of-the-art storage and retrieval system for medical images, which includes high-speed transmission of images and interpretation on electronic workstations. During his career with the U. S. Public Health Service, he directed the National X-ray Exposure Studies in the U.S., evaluated early teleradiology systems and designed the Digital Image Network projects, which were the predecessors of the MDIS program underway at several military medical facilities. Dr. Gitlin is a Fellow of the American College of Radiology and has contributed many articles to the literature on medical imaging.
